Headaches and migraines are a complaint that we commonly see in our clinic. Some people get them occasionally with stress, while others deal with them every day. There are different types of headaches with varying characteristics, severity, and intensity. Some can be mild whereas others can be debilitating.
If you experience frequent or intense headaches, you might be looking for natural treatments that can work with your current medications, or perhaps instead of them.
Homeopathy can be an effective complementary or standalone therapy for headaches, but only when used properly. Most people will try a remedy they found online, take it a few times, and then decide whether homeopathy works or not.
Sometimes it helps, but sometimes it doesn’t, and that can be confusing. In most cases, the issue isn’t homeopathy. It’s how the remedy was chosen and how it’s being used. So let’s talk about how to use and choose homeopathic medicines for your headaches.
Why Homeopathy for Headaches Can Be Confusing
If you’re like most people, then you’re used to thinking in terms of a diagnosis. You have a tension headache, so you take something for tension headaches. That makes sense in conventional medicine, where treatments are prescribed based primarily on the diagnosis.
Homeopathy doesn’t work this way. A headache is not just a headache. As you may know, there are many types of headaches and migraines. And even the same types of headaches can feel different from one person to the next.
Some are throbbing, some feel like pressure, some are worse with movement, while others improve when you lie down in a dark room. These differences are referred to as the “quality” of your headache.

In homeopathy, it’s essential to know the quality and characteristics of your headache, as well as what makes it feel better or worse, what triggers it, and so on. These details are what guide remedy selection.
Why One Remedy Doesn’t Work for Every Headache
To re-iterate, the goal in homeopathy is not to match the remedy to a diagnosis. Rather, it’s to get a complete understanding of the headache in great detail, and then choose a remedy based on that information.
Two people can both have migraines and need entirely different remedies. One may have sharp, intense pain with sensitivity to light and heat. Another may have a dull, heavy headache that builds slowly and improves with rest. These details matter.

In practice, we look at how the headache starts, where it’s located, what makes it better or worse, and what else is happening in the body at the same time. We also look at how it’s affecting your emotional state, appetite, thirst, etc. It's important to take note of your symptoms.
All of this information points us to a particular pattern that’s associated most closely with a single remedy. When remedies are chosen based only on the condition, results are almost always inconsistent. Yet, when they're chosen with care and attention to detail, your symptoms can dramatically improve.
Common Homeopathic Remedies for Headaches
Natrum muriaticum is probably the most common and most important remedy to consider for chronic headaches and migraines. It’s especially relevant if you have a history of grief, or when your headaches are linked to emotional stress. These headaches can feel like you have tiny hammers hitting your head. The pain can also be worse in the morning, in the sunlight, or after eye strain (like reading or looking at your phone/computer for too long).
Belladonna is often considered when your headaches are sudden and intense. There may be sensitivity to light and a sense of heat or pressure in your head. Like natrum muriaticum, they can be throbbing, but feel more like a bursting or pressing-outward sensation. Natrum is an inward pressure, whereas belladonna is outward pressure. With belladonna, the pain feels better when the nervous system is calm, like in a dark and quiet room.
Gelsemium is used more when the headache is accompanied by heaviness, fatigue, and a sluggish feeling. You may feel drained and want to rest. People who benefit from gelsemium usually feel dully, droopy, and drowsy. The pain often begins at the back of your head, right above your neck, and extends over the top to your forehead—very specific.
Nux vomica is commonly used for headaches linked to stress, overwork, or digestive strain. Think tension headaches or headaches following a night of drinking or overeating. These headaches often feel tight and stiff, and you'll almost always feel worse from lights and sound. If you feel cold and irritable with your headaches, nux vomica is a good consideration.
These are the top four homeopathic remedies that we’ve found to be useful for headaches in our clinic. But remember that everyone is different. There are thousands of homeopathic remedies, each of which has specific uses. That's why working with a licensed medical provider is usually the most effective way to benefit from homeopathic medicines.
What to Pay Attention To When Choosing a Remedy
If you’re trying to use homeopathy for headaches, it helps to pay attention to patterns. Start with the basics.
Where is the pain located? What does it feel like? When does it start?
Then go a step further. What makes it better or worse? Does rest help? Does light or noise make it worse? Are there any emotional or physical triggers?
You don’t need to overcomplicate it. But the more clearly you can describe the pattern, the easier it becomes to find an appropriate homeopathic remedy.
Can You Take Medications and Homeopathics Together?
The short answer is yes. Homeopathic medicines have no known interactions with any other medicines including drugs.
Most of our patients have already been to their primary care provider or a neurologist and are currently using medication to manage their headaches. The medications are usually helpful, but our patients typically want to stop taking them or find a more permanent solution.
Together with homeopathic remedies, lifestyle and dietary changes are important in headache prevention. For mild to moderate headaches, and sometimes even severe headaches, a holistic approach is a necessity.
If you’re not getting better with your current treatment plan, it’s worth getting additional guidance. Chronic headaches often involve multiple factors, and trying to manage them on your own can turn into trial and error.
In our practice, we look at the full picture, including lifestyle, stress patterns, and overall health. That makes it easier to identify what’s driving the symptoms and choose a more targeted approach.
